HECS
Feb 28, 2026
HECS-HELP repayments are calculated based on your Repayment Income (RI), which includes your taxable income plus any net rental losses, total reportable fringe benefits, and exempt foreign employment income.
For 2024-25, the minimum repayment threshold is $54,435. Below this, you pay nothing. Once you cross this threshold, repayments start at just 1% and gradually increase as your income rises, reaching 10% for incomes above $159,663.
A common misconception is that HECS repayments are like tax brackets — they're not. The percentage applies to your entire income, not just the portion above the threshold. This means crossing a threshold can result in a noticeable jump in your repayment amount.
